The Saigon Water Corporation (Sawaco) commenced the project on the design, supply and installation of a 2.4m diameter clean water pipeline from Binh Thai intersection in District 9 to Dien Bien Phu - Nguyen Binh Khiem intersection in Ho Chi Minh City, on November 15.

The 10km water supply pipeline, the largest of its kind in Ho Chi Minh City, will be installed in order to improve the quality of water provided for Districts 1, 3, Binh Thanh and Phu Nhuan.

The project is the largest component of the project on reducing water losses and expanding the water supply network of Sawaco, which is mainly funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The project has a total investment of approximately US$154 million, including US$138 million sourced from ODA loans from the ADB and the remaining amount being contributed by the city's budget and Sawaco.

The contract on the installation of the 10km of pipeline worth US$69 million was signed between Sawaco and French contractor Vinci Construction Grands Projets and Bessac CW1 in August 2017.

According to the contract, the contractor will carry out the design, supply and installation of the 10km pipeline passing the Saigon River, Rach Chiec Canal and Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe Canal to the Dien Bien Phu - Nguyen Binh Khiem intersection.

The project is scheduled to take 42 months to complete.

According to Sawaco, the project will help to improve the water transmission capacity of the water plants in Thu Duc district and enhance the quality of water supply service for more than 50% of the areas in Ho Chi Minh City.
